Thanksgiving Lost - The Way It Seems.... is not always the way it is.

It seems I’ve been on a wild goose chase (those who know me also know that I’m famous for those). This time the chase was for Thanksgiving decorations–specifically pilgrim hats to outfit the barnyard crew (Mr. Big and friends) for their Thanksgiving photo shoot. But wait–it seems that it’s already Christmas. Thanksgiving has been by-passed, or more likely, eliminated, because signs of it are nowhere to be found, although the calendar says it’s coming up in less than a week. What happened?

And now that I think of it, Thanksgiving got the boot a long time ago–I know, because I wrote about it years back and posted it on my previous blog when I still lived in Atlanta. (http://www.nancybabcockwrites.com/2011/07/what-about-thanksgiving/)

So, this ignoring of Thanksgiving is not new…ah…it must be a terrorist conspiracy–isn’t everything? That’s the impression one gets by listening to the news at least. Maybe the turkeys are staging a silent revolution so that fewer of them end up as dinner. If that’s the case, they still have a lot of work to do, because everyone I know still does Thanksgiving–it just must be without decorations, because my research now and in the past shows that there is none to be had. Call Hallmark! Surely this is a major oversight and an opportunity not-to-be-missed.

If you want to see T-giving thin on the ground, no better place than down here at the edge of the world, New Zealand. For proper Kiwis Thanksgiving doesn’t exist (even less than Hallowe’en!). But the celebration survives (barely, think) in the homes of many ex-pat Yanks — Carola and I make do make an effort.. At least the availability of suitable produce has increased over the years: Cranberry sauce, for example, was nowhere to be had when I first arrived in ’72. On the other hand, if it’s a pair of Pilgram hats you’re after… Good bloomin’ luck! PS What’s your fave Thanksgiving flick, Hannah and Her Sisters? (Yvette liked that one so well she named her last kitten Hannah!). Anyway, don’t let the Babcock team down — I expect to see the Pilgrim cayuses on the Net this year. (Thereby you can PROVE that America is still the fabled Land of Plenty!!!).

I’m amazed that anyone is even aware of Thanksgiving outside of the US, Geoff, although I guess the ex-pats do their bit and their best to keep it alive. I used to stage Thanksgiving dinners in France when I lived there–biggest problem was that it wasn’t “the season” for turkeys there (I was still eating them then). In France turkeys are for Christmas and that’s The Rule. No favorite Thanksgiving flick–I couldn’t stand all of the hyper-chatter in H and Her Sisters (as with most Woody Allen movies), so I never got past the first few minutes before I zoned out and fell asleep. I should try again, because maybe that was only the way it seemed back then…and maybe it would seem different now. 🙂

Can I just say what a relief to find an individual who really understands what they’re talking about on the web.

Thank you for the kind words. I am the first to admit that this blog has been sorely neglected this year–my excuse is that I’ve spent, and am spending, most of my time getting ready to move, then moving, then getting ready to move again. With luck this will be over by the end of the year. Thanks again for reading and commenting.
